Coby Kyros MID8125-4G White (Exclusive Color) 8 inch Android 2.3 Internet Touchscreen Tablet Review

(December 24, 2011)

I received the MID8125-4G about a week ago and have had ample time to go over most of the features; including the pros and cons of this device. First of all, THIS IS NOT AN IPAD OR A MOTOROLA XOOM! If you are buying this tablet in hopes that it is a cheap alternative to those higher-end devices, you are sadly mistaken. The Kryos has 512mb of RAM and a 1GHz Processor. The XOOM for example, has 1GB of RAM. So naturally this tablet responds a lot slower than a XOOM or iPAD. The Coby Kryos has a resistive screen. The XOOM and the iPads have capacitative screens. What does this mean? The latter is the type of screen most higher end smartphones have, such as the iPhone or HTC Evo, DROID BIONIC, Droid X, Sony Xperia Play, Nexus, etc. They are more fragile--but respond better because they are more sensitive. Resistive screens are built for durability. Sure they can withstand more, but as the name implies--they resist your finger touch. This makes it more difficult to click and drag items on the screen than it would be on a less resistive screen. I found this out AFTER I got the product and probably would have prevented me from buying it. It is a great product apart from the resistive screen though. I spent ~$170 on this tablet and am satisfied with it. I mainly bought it as an alternative to a Kindle Touch because I like Android. I wanted a tablet so I could read my ebooks through the Kindle App. For this purpose alone, I rate this a 5 star tablet for reading ebooks on as well as browsing the web casually.

This tablet DOES NOT come with the Android Market pre-installed. You can get it however, if you research on the web and learn to root your device and do a little tech touches yourself. Most people; however, this won't be the case. So keep that in mind.

The brightness of the screen could have been better as it it rather dark making it next to impossible to read the screen outside in the sun. Indoor use only basically.

Overall I rate this product 4 out of 5 stars. Its not a high end product, but wasn't meant to be. In this case, you get exactly what you pay for. If you want a tablet that you won't be afraid to drop or damage it easily, then this is for you. If you want a fast, sensitive device--that has compatibility with most apps and PCs, go for the Motorola XOOM is you can afford it.
